Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft Windows Update updates the Windows operating system to fix security problems or bugs in Windows components.
To use Windows Update you must have Windows 98 or newer and use Internet Explorer 5 or later.
Windows 2000 and XP can also use Automatic Updates.
If Automatic Updates are disabled, or you have a version older than 2000, you must update Windows from windowsupdate.microsoft.com!

Microsoft Office Update
Microsoft Office Update fixes security problems and adds additional support for Microsoft Office products.
To use Office Update, you must be using Internet Explorer 5.5 or later and own any editions of Office XP or Office 2003.
Earlier editions of Office (97/98/2000) won't work with Office Update.
They can be updated at the Office Download Catalog.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Windows XP SP 1 or earlier: First install
Microsoft Internet Explorer SP 1.
Use Windows Update for further patches.
Windows XP SP 2: Use Windows Update or Automatic Updates for security fixes in Internet Explorer 6 SP 2.
Internet Explorer 7 is also now available.

Windows Defender
From Microsoft: Windows Defender (Beta 2) is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software.
It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, and a new streamlined interface that minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive.
Windows Defender is available for Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE
Adaware is a popular and effective anti-spyware program that helps keep your privacy and computer performance high. Every time you scan you must download constantly-updated spyware definitions.
Updates are easily made from within Adaware.

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Reader enables you to view PDF files.
Updates are done within Adobe Reader or from Adobe's website.
Windows 2000 and XP run Adobe Reader 7.0 and above.
Operating systems older than Windows 2000 can run Adobe Readers as new as version 6

Java Runtime Environment
Java enables Java web content. Download the JRE, not the JDK, if you don't plan on creating Java applets but still want to view them.
For computers already with Java 1.5.0 or greater, updates can be done within Windows.
