Before you scan using Adaware, you must update it to make sure new spyware is able to be detected.

  1. If your file that defines what is spyware is old enough, Adaware will automatically prompt you to update. In this case, click OK when it asks you to update.

  2. Accept Adaware's offer to update

  3. Even if your definition file is not old enough for Adaware to prompt you, you still need to update. To do so, click on the Check for updates now link in Adaware.

  4. Once in the WebUpdate dialog box, click Connect to see if new definitions are available. (You must be connected to the internet.)

  5. If new definitions are found a box will appear and prompt you to download. Click OK to continue the update.

  6. The update may take between a few minutes or a few seconds depending on your connection. Do not close or cancel the update until the Finish button appears, at which time you can click it and return to the Adaware main window.

  7. At the main window, click Start to begin scanning for spyware.

  8. In most cases, smart system scan is enough to clean your computer. Click Next to begin scanning. If you suspect your computer still has spyware after scanning with smart system scan, try again with full system scan selected, or you may have a virus.

  9. The scan will begin. Most computers have around 120000 objects to scan.

  10. After the scan is complete, Adaware will dispay any spyware it found. Click Next to continue.

  11. Click on the Critial Objects tab for a list of spyware. If no critial objects were found, the tab will be missing and you may click Next to finish

  12. In the Critical Objects tab, right-click on any object's check box and choose Select All Objects. This will mark all critical objects for deletion. You can see what programs or files are spyware by looking at it's location on the hard drive under the Object column.

  13. Click Next to delete the objects, and click OK in the confirmation dialog box.

The scan is now complete. You should scan at least once every two weeks, making sure to follow these steps every time you scan.
